To the denizens of this mountain,
I will not ask why you fell
it isn’t fair it isn’t fair to ask the flowers
why they abandon hope in the absence of
the sun
I will not ask why you found comfort in the
dark
in the whispers of the voices in your head
I will not ask why you swallowed pills with
a pint of vodka for pain is minimal
when intoxicated
I will not ask why
the world turned its back on you for it turned
its back on me too
I will not ask why
because we often forget that the people
with mental illness did not ask
to be there
to hear the voices in their head
to die everyday
I will not ask why
but I will
stay
Incredibly beautiful

Great post! We must stay. Despite the weight of the mountain and the ease with which gravity pulls us tumbling downward. We must stay. Well done!

Loved the entire piece.
“I will not ask why but I will stay” These lines though took my heart.
We need to stay, without asking without questioning, we must be there.
Beautiful piece!!! Amazing!!

This is the real world of which you speak. The human condition is plagued with obstacles for so many. Let the sunlight curve around and bathe the flowers and surprise us 😌

Oh yes, yes, agree with the comments. Particularly the way you have bracketed the poem with the lines above – flowers abandoning hope in the absence of the sun – ties the natural element to the Natural – hits home to the pit of my stomach, crushing, Then the stark statement of defiance against unknowable powers. Echoes many of my beliefs in so few words. And encourages, beautiful, thank you.
